The great brouhaha continues to spin across the media. Jock McConnell won’t support England in the World Cup and Alex Salmond is right up there with him. Both declare allegiance to Trinidad and Tobago, because this team has some players who play in Scottish leagues. Besides, it is the underdog and Scottish politicians make a point of standing alongside underdogs, mostly because it is politically correct to do so, and political correctness is all in Scottish politics.
England should be grateful that Jack eschews them. Look back at the causes he has supported – Tartan Week, Malawi, pinstrip kilts – England has had an escape here. They might well win. Jack of course has stated in his noble way that football has nothing to do with politics. I wonder if that thought drifted into his head as he lectured Northern Ireland’s politicians recently. Certainly The Great Brown Shark across the Forth sees the political consequences of not supporting England.
Trinidad and Tobago on the other hand should be careful knowing that Alex is on their side. Always the bridesmaid but never the bride, the SNP still struggles for recognition. Just like T & T. This could be like cleaving unto like.
